Loreto Tetra, Hyphessobrycon loretoensis, is a small South American characin native to the Peruvian Amazon, particularly around the Loreto region and associated tributaries near Iquitos. It inhabits slow-moving blackwater and clearwater streams, flooded forest margins, and shallow tributaries with leaf litter, submerged roots, and dense marginal vegetation. These habitats are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, with subdued lighting created by forest canopy cover.

Adult Hyphessobrycon loretoensis typically reaches about 1 to 1.25 inches in length. The body is slender and laterally compressed with a translucent silver to pale amber base coloration. A distinct dark lateral stripe runs through the body and often extends into the caudal peduncle, while subtle reddish to orange tones may develop in the fins and body under good conditions. In groups, the reflective sheen and delicate coloration create a lively, shimmering effect in planted aquariums.

A tank of at least 10 to 15 gallons is suitable for a proper group, though larger aquariums provide greater stability and a stronger schooling display. Loreto Tetras are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of eight or more to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. The aquarium should include plants, driftwood, leaf litter, and shaded areas while maintaining open swimming space in the midwater.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 5.5 to 7.0 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Gentle filtration and regular water changes help maintain the high water quality these small tetras appreciate.

Feeding Loreto Tetras is straightforward. In nature they feed on tiny insects, larvae, microcrustaceans, and suspended organic matter. In the aquarium they readily accept finely crushed flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods such as cyclops, baby brine shrimp, and daphnia. A varied diet supports coloration and overall health.

Temperament is peaceful and social. Loreto Tetras do well with other small, calm species such as pencilfish, Corydoras, small rasboras, and dwarf cichlids. Larger or highly active fish should be avoided, as they may intimidate or outcompete these small tetras.

Breeding is possible in captivity but not commonly attempted. Like many small tetras, they are egg scatterers that deposit eggs among plants or fine substrate. Adults do not provide parental care and may consume eggs if left with them.

Hyphessobrycon loretoensis is a delicate and attractive nano tetra that brings subtle color, movement, and natural schooling behavior to peaceful Amazonian aquariums. Its small size and calm temperament make it especially well suited for planted and blackwater-style community setups.
