Myriophyllum mattogrossense is a South American aquatic plant native to the Paraguay–Paraná river system and adjacent freshwater networks across Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and northern Argentina, with its core distribution centered in the Mato Grosso region of Brazil from which the species takes its name. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, floodplain lagoons, oxbow lakes, marshes, and seasonally inundated wetlands, where water levels fluctuate throughout the year. These habitats are typically warm, nutrient-rich, and well lit, allowing dense submerged vegetation to develop during periods of stable water.

Myriophyllum mattogrossense is characterized by its finely divided, feathery leaves arranged in whorls along an upright but flexible stem. The foliage is soft and plume-like, creating a light, airy texture that contrasts well with broader-leaved plants. Under good conditions the plant grows rapidly upward toward the surface, forming tall stands that sway gently in the current and provide complex three-dimensional structure within the water column.

In the aquarium, Myriophyllum mattogrossense performs best under moderate to high lighting and benefits from vertical space that allows it to grow naturally without constant trimming. It roots readily in fine sand or nutrient-rich substrates but can also continue growing for a time as a floating stem before anchoring. Gentle to moderate flow is ideal, as strong current can damage the delicate leaf segments, while stagnant water may allow debris to accumulate within the foliage.

Water conditions are broadly tolerated. The species thrives in temperatures between 72 and 82°F and adapts well to pH values ranging from slightly acidic to neutral and mildly alkaline. Soft to moderately hard water is suitable. While CO₂ supplementation is not strictly necessary, consistent nutrient availability and stable parameters significantly improve growth density and coloration, preventing leggy or sparse stems.

Nutrient uptake occurs through both the root system and the water column. In aquariums with higher fish load or regular fertilization, Myriophyllum mattogrossense grows quickly and may require frequent trimming to maintain shape and prevent surface crowding. Cuttings propagate easily and can be replanted to create thicker groupings or controlled background stands.

The fine, feathery structure of Myriophyllum mattogrossense makes it highly valuable for aquariums housing fry, shrimp, and small fish, as it provides excellent shelter, spawning substrate, and feeding surfaces for biofilm and microfauna. It is best paired with peaceful species, as large or herbivorous fish may damage or uproot the plant.

Propagation occurs primarily through stem cuttings, with even short sections capable of rooting and resuming growth under suitable conditions. In natural environments the plant also reproduces through flowering and seed production during emergent growth phases associated with seasonal flooding, though this is rarely observed in aquariums.

Myriophyllum mattogrossense is a fast-growing, elegant aquatic plant that thrives in well-lit, nutrient-balanced freshwater systems, offering soft texture, vertical movement, and excellent ecological function in naturalistic and planted aquarium layouts.
