Orange Tiger Otocinclus, Hypoptopoma sp. “Peru”, is an undescribed South American loricariid catfish native to the upper Amazon Basin of Peru. It is believed to originate from tributaries associated with the Río Ucayali drainage, where it inhabits slow to moderately flowing streams with abundant submerged vegetation, driftwood, and biofilm-covered surfaces. These habitats are typically warm, well oxygenated, and rich in algae and microorganisms that support constant grazing.

Adult Orange Tiger Otocinclus typically reaches about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. The body is elongated and noticeably flatter than that of true Otocinclus, with a broad, wedge-shaped head and eyes positioned high on the skull. This unique profile allows the fish to cling tightly to leaves, wood, and other surfaces while grazing. Coloration is exceptional, featuring a vibrant orange to golden base crossed by bold black tiger-like bands and irregular markings that extend across the body and fins. The striking pattern, combined with the fish’s unusual body shape, makes it one of the most distinctive algae-eating catfish available in the aquarium hobby.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a proper group, though larger aquariums provide greater stability and more natural grazing opportunities. Orange Tiger Otocinclus are social fish and should be maintained in groups of six or more to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. The aquarium should include abundant driftwood, broad-leaved plants, smooth stones, and mature surfaces rich in biofilm. Moderate water movement and excellent oxygenation are strongly recommended.

Water conditions should remain exceptionally clean and stable. Temperatures between 72 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. This species is sensitive to deteriorating water quality and should only be introduced into mature, well-established aquariums with excellent filtration and consistently low nitrate levels.

Feeding Orange Tiger Otocinclus requires more than naturally occurring algae. In the wild they graze continuously on biofilm, soft algae, diatoms, and the microorganisms growing on submerged surfaces. In the aquarium they should be provided with mature biofilm along with algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, Repashy-style gel foods, blanched vegetables such as zucchini and spinach, and other herbivore diets. Newly established aquariums rarely produce enough natural food to sustain this species on algae alone.

Temperament is exceptionally peaceful and community-friendly. Orange Tiger Otocinclus coexist well with small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, shrimp, and other gentle community fish. They spend most of their day methodically grazing surfaces and rarely show aggression toward either tankmates or one another.

Breeding has not yet been reliably documented in captivity, and much of the species’ natural history remains unknown due to its undescribed status. Most specimens currently available in the aquarium trade are wild collected.

Hypoptopoma sp. “Peru” is one of the most spectacular algae-grazing catfish to enter the aquarium hobby in recent years. Its brilliant orange and black tiger pattern, unusual body shape, peaceful temperament, and constant grazing behavior make the Orange Tiger Otocinclus an outstanding addition to mature planted aquariums and specialized South American community setups.
