The Panda Garra, scientifically known as Garra flavatra, is a small, active freshwater fish native to the mountain streams of northern Myanmar. It is popular in the aquarium hobby both for its bold “panda-like” coloration and its usefulness as a grazer of algae and biofilm.

Adult Panda Garras typically reach about 3 to 3.5 inches (7.5 to 9 cm) in length. They have a stocky, elongated body with a sucker-like mouth adapted to clinging to rocks in strong currents. Their base color is olive to golden brown with several broad black vertical bands along the body and a dark patch at the base of the caudal fin, giving them their panda appearance. The fins may show yellow or orange highlights, especially in well-conditioned fish.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a small group. Panda Garras thrive in aquariums with strong filtration, high oxygen levels, and moderate to fast water flow, mimicking their natural riverine environment. Provide smooth rocks, driftwood, and a sandy or fine gravel substrate with plenty of surfaces for algae and biofilm growth. They are inquisitive and active, often perching on stones or glass and darting about in search of food.

Water parameters should include a temperature of 72 to 79°F (22 to 26°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Stable, clean conditions are important for long-term health.

Feeding Garra flavatra is straightforward. While they graze on algae and biofilm, they are omnivores and require a balanced diet. Provide algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, or cucumber. They also enjoy live or frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia, or brine shrimp.

Panda Garras are generally peaceful and can be kept with other small to medium community fish such as barbs, danios, rasboras, and Corydoras. They may spar with each other, especially males, but serious damage is rare if enough space and hiding spots are provided. Keeping them in groups of three or more helps diffuse aggression.

Breeding in captivity is rare and not well documented, likely requiring highly specific conditions that replicate seasonal changes in their native streams.

Garra flavatra (Panda Garra) is a hardy and engaging species, valued for both its striking black-and-gold banding and its algae-grazing habits, making it a lively and practical addition to river-style community aquariums.
