The Panda Loach, scientifically known as Yaoshania pachychilus, is a rare and highly sought-after species of freshwater loach native to the fast-flowing mountain streams of southern China, particularly in the Guangxi and Guangdong provinces. It is renowned in the aquarium hobby for its distinctive black-and-white “panda” coloration and its energetic, playful behavior, making it a prized addition for advanced aquarists and biotope enthusiasts.

Adult Panda Loaches typically reach about 2.5 to 3 inches (6 to 7.5 cm) in length. Juveniles are especially striking, with bold, high-contrast black and white bands that give them a panda-like appearance. As they mature, their coloration becomes more subdued, often developing a mottled or less sharply defined pattern, though adults still retain some of the classic panda markings.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a small group. Panda Loaches are social and should be kept in groups of at least six to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors. The aquarium should replicate their native habitat with a soft sand or fine gravel substrate, rounded river stones, cobbles, and plenty of smooth rocks to provide hiding spots and grazing surfaces. Strong water flow and high oxygenation are essential—use a river tank manifold, powerheads, or a strong filter to simulate the swift, clear waters they require.

Water parameters for the Panda Loach should include a temperature range of 64 to 75°F (18 to 24°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Pristine water quality is crucial, as they are sensitive to organic waste and require regular water changes and efficient filtration.

Feeding Yaoshania pachychilus is straightforward but should be varied. They are omnivorous and will graze on biofilm and algae growing on rocks, but should also be provided with high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and fresh vegetables like blanched spinach or zucchini. Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, and brine shrimp for best health and color.

Panda Loaches are peaceful and can be kept with other small, fast-moving riverine species such as hillstream loaches, danios, and white cloud mountain minnows. Avoid slow-moving or long-finned fish that may be outcompeted for food or stressed by the strong current.

Breeding the Panda Loach in captivity is rarely achieved and not well documented. They are thought to spawn in response to environmental cues mimicking seasonal changes in their native streams, such as increased flow and cooler water. Fry are small and require infusoria or other tiny live foods.

Yaoshania pachychilus (Panda Loach) is a beautiful, lively species that rewards dedicated aquarists with unique appearance and fascinating behavior in a well-oxygenated, fast-flowing river aquarium.
