Parkinson’s Rainbowfish, Melanotaenia parkinsoni, is a large rainbowfish native to Papua New Guinea, where it occurs in rivers, streams, and floodplain waters associated with the Sepik and nearby drainage systems. These habitats are typically warm, well oxygenated, and moderately flowing, with a mix of submerged vegetation, woody structure, and open swimming areas. The species often occupies clear to lightly stained water where sunlight penetrates well and supports active schooling behavior.

Adult Parkinson’s Rainbowfish typically reaches about 4.5 to 5 inches in length. The body is deep and laterally compressed with large reflective scales that create a metallic sheen. Mature males display striking coloration with a blue to steel-blue front half of the body transitioning into bright orange or reddish tones toward the rear. The dorsal and anal fins are elongated and may show vivid yellow, orange, and red highlights. Females are slightly smaller and less intensely colored but still display the characteristic two-tone body pattern.

A tank of at least 55 to 75 gallons is recommended for a proper group. Parkinson’s Rainbowfish is a schooling species and should be kept in groups of six or more to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. The aquarium should emphasize long open swimming space with plants, driftwood, or rocks arranged along the edges to provide structure without restricting movement. Moderate water flow and strong filtration help replicate their riverine environment and maintain water quality.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.5 to 8.0 and moderate hardness. Parkinson’s Rainbowfish is relatively adaptable but thrives best in well-maintained aquariums with regular water changes and strong oxygenation.

Feeding Parkinson’s Rainbowfish is straightforward. In nature they feed on insects, small crustaceans, and other aquatic invertebrates. In the aquarium they readily accept high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. A varied diet supports strong coloration and healthy growth.

Temperament is peaceful but energetic. Parkinson’s Rainbowfish does well with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish that tolerate their active swimming behavior. Suitable tankmates include other rainbowfish, larger tetras, peaceful cichlids, and robust catfish. Very small fish may be intimidated by their size and activity level.

Breeding is possible in captivity. Like other rainbowfish, they are egg scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Adults do not provide parental care, and eggs or fry should be removed if breeding is desired.

Melanotaenia parkinsoni is a bold and colorful rainbowfish that combines strong two-tone coloration with constant activity. When kept in proper groups with ample swimming space and clean water, Parkinson’s Rainbowfish becomes a vibrant centerpiece species in larger freshwater aquariums.
