Pelvicachromis taeniatus is a small West African cichlid native to the coastal river systems of Nigeria and Cameroon, where it inhabits slow-moving, shaded freshwater environments rich in leaf litter, submerged roots, and dense marginal vegetation. Its natural distribution includes river basins such as the Cross River, Meme, Lokoundje, Mungo, Wouri, Ntem, and several smaller coastal drainages that flow into the Gulf of Guinea. Across this range, the species occupies quiet forest streams, blackwater creeks, swampy floodplain pools, and shallow tannin-stained tributaries where soft, acidic conditions prevail and structural complexity offers shelter for foraging and breeding. Distinct geographic variants occur throughout its range, each displaying unique coloration patterns.

Adult Pelvicachromis taeniatus typically reach about 2.5 to 3 inches in length, with females often appearing slightly smaller yet more intensely colored than males. The species is known for its vivid belly coloration, striking tail patterns, iridescent body highlights, and pronounced sexual dimorphism. Females develop rich purples, reds, and yellows during courtship, while males show elongated fins and a more subtle but elegant coloration. Their graceful movements, calm demeanor, and intricate displays make them one of the most refined dwarf cichlids from West Africa.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a pair, with additional space required for maintaining multiple territories or groups. Natural aquascaping with driftwood, caves, leaf litter, and dense planting closely mirrors the shaded, debris-rich environments they occupy in the wild. The species favors low to moderate flow and benefits from subdued lighting, which enhances their coloration and provides a sense of security.

Water parameters should reflect the soft, acidic character of their native habitats. Ideal conditions include temperatures between 74 and 80°F, a pH ranging from 5.5 to 7.0, and soft to moderately soft water. They thrive in clean, stable conditions with frequent water changes and minimal fluctuations. Blackwater tint from botanicals such as leaves and wood helps replicate their natural environment and encourages natural behavior.

Feeding Pelvicachromis taeniatus is straightforward. In the wild they consume insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and organic detritus sifted from leaf litter and substrate. In the aquarium they readily accept high-quality micro-pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, and occasional vegetable-based offerings. A varied diet enhances coloration and supports their natural feeding rhythms.

Pelvicachromis taeniatus is peaceful for a cichlid and coexists well with small, gentle tankmates such as tetras, barbs, small rasboras, pencilfish, killifish, and peaceful bottom dwellers. Territoriality increases during breeding, but aggression remains modest compared to many cichlid species. Adequate cover and visual barriers help maintain harmony within the aquarium.

Breeding is readily achievable in captivity. Pairs form stable bonds and typically spawn in caves or crevices, with the female tending eggs and fry while the male guards the surrounding territory. Fry remain close to the parents and accept baby brine shrimp and powdered foods once free-swimming. Parental care is strong, and watching the family group interact is one of the highlights of keeping this species.

Pelvicachromis taeniatus is a beautifully patterned, peaceful, and rewarding West African dwarf cichlid that thrives in planted, softly lit aquariums with clean, stable water, offering refined coloration, engaging displays, and attentive parental behavior in a compact and manageable size.
