The Pitbull Pleco, scientifically known as Parotocinclus jumbo, is a small suckermouth catfish native to the Paraíba do Sul River basin in Brazil. Despite the common name, it is not a true pleco from the larger genera but instead belongs to the group of dwarf Loricariids closely related to Otocinclus. It is highly regarded in the aquarium hobby for its compact size, algae-grazing habits, and peaceful nature.

Adult Pitbull Plecos typically grow to about 2.5 to 3 inches (6 to 7.5 cm). They have a flattened body with a broad head, large pectoral fins, and a downward-facing sucker mouth adapted for clinging to rocks in flowing water. Their coloration is gray to brown, often mottled or speckled, helping them blend into sandy or rocky substrates. Males can be distinguished by their longer pelvic fin extensions and more robust body shape.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a small group. These plecos are social and do best in groups of four or more, where they show more confidence and natural activity. The aquarium should have a soft sand or fine gravel substrate, smooth rocks, driftwood, and live plants for cover and grazing surfaces. Strong filtration, high oxygen levels, and moderate water flow are important to replicate their riverine environment.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 72 to 79°F (22 to 26°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. They require clean, stable water with regular partial changes.

Feeding Parotocinclus jumbo is straightforward. They consume algae and biofilm but should also be given sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach, and occasional protein-rich live or frozen foods such as daphnia or bloodworms.

Pitbull Plecos are peaceful bottom dwellers and are well-suited to community aquariums with small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, or dwarf cichlids. Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive species.

Breeding in aquaria is rare but possible. They are cave spawners, with males guarding eggs deposited in crevices. Raising fry can be challenging, as they require a steady supply of biofilm and finely crushed algae foods once free-swimming.

Parotocinclus jumbo (Pitbull Pleco) is a hardy and engaging dwarf Loricariid that adds algae control, unique behavior, and peaceful activity to planted and river-style aquariums.
