The Swordtail, scientifically known as Xiphophorus hellerii, is a hardy and colorful livebearing fish native to Central America, including rivers and streams in Mexico, Belize, and Honduras. It has been a staple in the aquarium hobby for over a century and is best known for the distinctive elongated lower lobe of the male’s tail fin, which resembles a sword and gives the species its common name.
In the wild, wild-type Swordtails are typically olive green with a red or orange lateral stripe, but through selective breeding, a wide variety of colors and patterns have been developed. These include red, orange, yellow, black, pineapple, marbled, and even lyretail and hi-fin variants. Males usually reach around 4 inches (10 cm), including the sword extension, while females grow slightly larger and rounder, up to 5 inches (12 cm), but lack the sword.
Swordtails are peaceful and adaptable, making them ideal for community aquariums. They are active swimmers and should be kept in tanks of at least 20 to 30 gallons. They prefer a planted environment with open swimming areas and gentle filtration. Although peaceful, males can be competitive with each other, so it’s best to keep one male per two or more females to minimize aggression and encourage natural behavior.
Water conditions should include a temperature range of 72 to 82°F (22 to 28°C), a pH between 7.0 and 8.2, and moderately hard water. Swordtails are very tolerant of a range of conditions but thrive in stable, well-maintained aquariums with regular water changes.
Feeding Swordtails is easy, as they are omnivorous and not picky. They will readily accept high-quality flake food, micro pellets, frozen or live brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, and even vegetable matter like blanched spinach or spirulina flakes.
As livebearers, Swordtails reproduce readily in captivity. Females give birth to free-swimming fry approximately every 28 to 35 days. A single female can produce 20 to 80 fry at a time. If you want to raise the young, provide dense cover with plants or breeding traps, as adults will often eat their own fry.
Overall, Xiphophorus hellerii (Swordtail) is an easy-to-keep, lively, and attractive species that suits both beginners and experienced aquarists. Their vibrant colors, livebearing nature, and ease of care make them a favorite in planted and community aquariums.
