The Reticulated Siamese Algae Eater, scientifically known as Crossocheilus reticulatus, is an active freshwater fish native to the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. It is closely related to the true Siamese Algae Eater but is easily recognized by the distinctive reticulated, net-like scale pattern along its flanks. It is appreciated in the aquarium trade both for its algae-grazing abilities and for its bold, streamlined appearance.

Adult Reticulated Siamese Algae Eaters typically reach about 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm) in length. They have a slender, torpedo-shaped body with a silvery-gray base color overlaid by a dark lattice-like pattern. A black horizontal stripe usually runs from the snout through the eye and along the side to the base of the tail, though it may appear faint or broken with age. The fins are usually clear or slightly dusky.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a small group. These fish are energetic swimmers that require open space, but they also appreciate driftwood, smooth stones, and sturdy plants to provide shade and algae-grazing surfaces. A soft sand or fine gravel substrate with moderate water flow and strong oxygenation helps replicate their natural riverine habitat. A tight lid is important, as they are strong jumpers.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 72 to 79°F (22 to 26°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. They thrive in clean, well-maintained water with regular partial changes.

Feeding Crossocheilus reticulatus is simple, as they are primarily herbivorous grazers. They consume soft algae, biofilm, and detritus but should also be given high-quality sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables like spinach, zucchini, or cucumber. Occasional live or frozen protein foods can be offered, but a diet rich in plant matter is essential for long-term health.

Reticulated Siamese Algae Eaters are peaceful and suitable for community aquariums with other active, mid-sized fish such as barbs, danios, rasboras, gouramis, rainbowfish, and loaches. They are best kept either singly or in small groups of at least four to reduce territorial sparring, but avoid housing them with aggressive cichlids or very timid species.

Breeding the Reticulated Siamese Algae Eater in captivity is very rare and not well documented. Most specimens available in the aquarium trade are wild-caught.

Crossocheilus reticulatus (Reticulated Siamese Algae Eater) is a hardy, attractive algae grazer that provides both utility and beauty in medium to large community aquariums.
