The Rose Badis, scientifically known as Badis sp. "buxar", is a rare and attractive species of badid native to slow-moving streams and rivers in the Buxar region of northern India. It is valued in the aquarium hobby for its unique pinkish-red coloration, peaceful nature, and fascinating behavior, making it a great choice for dedicated aquarists and biotope setups.

Adult Rose Badis typically reach about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6.5 cm) in length. Males display a soft rosy to pinkish body coloration, often with subtle vertical bars and iridescent blue or green highlights on the fins and cheeks, especially when displaying or breeding. Females are generally smaller and paler, with a silvery or beige background color and shorter fins.

A tank of at least 15 to 20 gallons is suitable for a small group. Rose Badis prefer a well-planted aquarium with a soft sand or fine gravel substrate, plenty of hiding spots using driftwood, rocks, or dense vegetation, and subdued lighting to replicate their natural environment. Gentle filtration and stable, clean water are important for their health.

Water parameters for the Rose Badis should include a temperature range of 72 to 77°F (22 to 25°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes are essential, as this species can be sensitive to declining water quality.

Feeding Badis sp. "buxar" can be challenging, as they are micropredators and strongly prefer live or frozen foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, bloodworms, and grindal worms. Some individuals may accept high-quality micro pellets, but a varied diet of live foods will bring out their best color and natural behavior.

Rose Badis are peaceful but territorial, especially males. They do best in species-only tanks or with other small, gentle fish and shrimp. Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive tankmates.

Breeding the Rose Badis in captivity is possible. Males will establish territories and entice females to lay eggs in caves or crevices. Males guard the eggs and newly hatched fry, which should be offered infusoria or baby brine shrimp as their first foods.

Badis sp. "buxar" (Rose Badis) is a delicate, beautifully colored species that brings unique charm and fascinating natural behaviors to planted and biotope aquariums.
