Satanoperca jurupari, commonly known as the Demon Eartheater or Jurupari Eartheater, is a large South American cichlid native to the Amazon Basin. Its natural distribution includes Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela, where it inhabits slow-moving rivers, floodplain lakes, and forest channels with sandy substrates. These environments are typically warm, soft-water systems with gentle flow, submerged wood, leaf litter, and open areas of fine sand that allow for natural foraging behavior.

Adult Satanoperca jurupari commonly reaches 8 to 10 inches in length, with some individuals growing slightly larger in spacious aquariums. The body is elongated and laterally compressed, with a sloping forehead and a downward-facing mouth adapted for sifting sand. Coloration is subtle but elegant, usually ranging from beige to light brown with darker vertical bars and scattered iridescent blue or green speckling across the body and fins. A distinct dark spot is often visible mid-flank. Their calm posture and deliberate movements give them a refined presence rather than the flashy appearance of many cichlids.

A large aquarium is essential for long-term success. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended for a small group, as this species is social and displays best when kept in groups of four or more. The aquarium should prioritize open bottom space with a fine sand substrate, as Satanoperca jurupari constantly takes mouthfuls of sand to sift for food. Driftwood, branches, and rocks should be arranged around the perimeter to provide structure without obstructing open areas. Plants are often uprooted and are generally not recommended unless well protected.

Water conditions should reflect soft Amazonian environments. Ideal temperatures range from 76 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0 and soft to moderately soft water. Stability and cleanliness are critical, as this species is sensitive to poor water quality. Strong filtration, high oxygen levels, and regular water changes are necessary to support their size and constant activity.

Feeding Satanoperca jurupari requires sinking foods that reach the substrate. In nature they feed on insect larvae, small crustaceans, organic detritus, and microorganisms extracted from sand. In the aquarium they accept sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms and mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods that can be sifted from the substrate. Floating foods are often ignored. A varied diet supports health and natural behavior.

Temperament is peaceful for a large cichlid. Satanoperca jurupari is non-aggressive and generally ignores tankmates, though it will outcompete slower fish at feeding time. It should not be housed with aggressive or highly territorial cichlids. Suitable tankmates include other peaceful large South American cichlids, large characins, catfish, and similar-sized non-aggressive species.

Breeding Satanoperca jurupari in captivity is possible but uncommon. They are biparental mouthbrooders, with eggs laid on a cleaned surface and then taken into the mouth for incubation. Successful breeding requires mature individuals, stable water conditions, and minimal stress.

Satanoperca jurupari is a graceful, sand-sifting cichlid best suited for large, soft-water aquariums that emphasize open substrate and calm tankmates. Its peaceful nature, natural foraging behavior, and understated beauty make it an excellent choice for aquarists seeking an authentic Amazonian centerpiece species.
