Sidestripe Rasbora, Rasbora paviana, is a Southeast Asian cyprinid native to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and portions of the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems. It inhabits rivers, streams, floodplain waters, canals, and seasonally flooded habitats with moderate flow, sandy or silty substrates, and abundant shoreline vegetation. These environments are typically warm, well oxygenated, and subject to seasonal fluctuations in water level.

Adult Sidestripe Rasboras typically reach about 3 inches in length, making them one of the larger Rasbora species commonly encountered in the aquarium hobby. The body is elongated and streamlined with a bright silver to pale gold base coloration. A bold dark stripe runs horizontally from the snout through the body and into the caudal peduncle, giving rise to the common name. Above the stripe, the scales often display subtle gold, bronze, or green iridescence depending on lighting conditions. The fins are generally clear to lightly tinted yellow, creating an elegant and understated appearance.

A tank of at least 55 gallons is recommended for a proper school, with larger aquariums preferred. Sidestripe Rasboras are active schooling fish and should be maintained in groups of six or more, though larger schools provide a more natural display. The aquarium should offer extensive open swimming space along with plants, driftwood, and shaded areas around the perimeter. Moderate water movement helps replicate their natural environment.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Rasbora paviana is relatively adaptable and performs well in a variety of conditions provided water quality remains high.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature they consume insects, larvae, small crustaceans, and other aquatic invertebrates. In the aquarium they readily accept flakes, pellets, frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, and brine shrimp, along with a variety of prepared foods. A varied diet supports healthy growth and coloration.

Temperament is peaceful and community-friendly. Sidestripe Rasboras coexist well with other medium-sized, non-aggressive fish including rainbowfish, larger tetras, peaceful barbs, gouramis, and catfish. Their size and active nature make them particularly effective as dither fish in larger community aquariums.

Breeding is possible but not commonly attempted in home aquariums. Like many rasboras, they are egg scatterers that release eggs among plants or spawning media. Adults provide no parental care and may consume eggs if left with them.

Rasbora paviana is a hardy, active, and underrated schooling fish that combines graceful movement with attractive natural coloration. Its larger size, peaceful temperament, and striking lateral stripe make the Sidestripe Rasbora an excellent choice for spacious Southeast Asian community aquariums.
