Neolamprologus similis is a tiny, fascinating shell-dwelling cichlid native to the sandy, shell-strewn shallows of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Closely related to Neolamprologus multifasciatus, this species is prized for its colony-forming behavior, unique relationship with snail shells, and suitability for small aquariums.

Adult Neolamprologus similis typically reach about 1.25 to 1.5 inches (3 to 4 cm) in length, making them one of the smallest cichlids in the world. They have a slender, elongated body with a tan to pale golden background, marked by several thin, dark vertical bars running from the back to the belly. One of the most distinctive features is a series of iridescent blue-green lines that extend across the head and cheek. The eyes are large and expressive, and their fins are typically translucent with a hint of blue or yellow. Males may be slightly larger and display more intense coloration, while females are rounder.

A tank of at least 10 to 15 gallons is suitable for a small colony. Neolamprologus similis should always be kept in groups and provided with plenty of empty snail shells (such as escargot or Neothauma shells) for shelter, breeding, and territory. Use a fine sand substrate so they can dig and move shells naturally, and consider arranging shells in clusters with open spaces between for territory boundaries. Rockwork or piles of slate can be used to further break up lines of sight and minimize aggression.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 75 to 80°F (24 to 27°C), a pH between 7.8 and 9.0, and hard, alkaline water with high mineral content, as found in Lake Tanganyika. Regular partial water changes and good filtration are essential to maintain water quality.

Feeding Neolamprologus similis is straightforward. They accept a variety of high-quality sinking pellets or flakes, as well as live or frozen foods like baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops. They will also pick at algae and microorganisms in the tank.

Neolamprologus similis are peaceful by cichlid standards but are territorial around their chosen shells. They do best in species-only tanks or with other small Tanganyikan cichlids, such as Julidochromis or smaller Lamprologus species. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive fish.

Breeding Neolamprologus similis is easy and often occurs naturally. Females lay eggs inside their shell, and the male fertilizes them from outside. Fry remain in or near the shell for protection and gradually venture out as they grow. Provide ample shells and stable water conditions to encourage colony growth and fry survival.

Neolamprologus similis is a charming, colony-forming shell dweller that brings fascinating social behavior and activity to Tanganyikan and small cichlid aquariums.
