Sodalis Corydoras, Corydoras sodalis, is a South American armored catfish native to the central and western Amazon Basin of Brazil and Peru. It is recorded from the Amazon River system, including the Rio Yavarí region along the Brazilian-Peruvian border and waters of Loreto, Peru. It inhabits shallow river margins, tributaries, flooded areas, and other quiet habitats with fine sand, leaf litter, submerged wood, and gentle water movement.

Adult Corydoras sodalis typically reaches about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. The body has a pale cream, silvery beige, or faintly pinkish base covered with an intricate gray to dark brown network of interconnected lines and irregular markings. This reticulated pattern extends across the head, back, and sides, creating the net-like appearance responsible for the common name False Network Corydoras. The markings are finer and more interconnected across the head and become broader and less orderly along the body. The caudal fin is usually crossed by several narrow rows of dark spots or broken bars. Unlike the very similar Corydoras reticulatus, Corydoras sodalis does not have a large, clearly defined black blotch in the dorsal fin. There is also no bold stripe running from the snout to the tail.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a proper group. Sodalis Corydoras are highly social and should be maintained in groups of six or more, with larger groups encouraging greater confidence and more natural activity. Fine sand is the ideal substrate because it allows them to search for food without damaging their sensitive barbels. Driftwood, leaf litter, plants, and shaded retreats can be added while leaving open areas of sand available for group foraging.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH between approximately 6.0 and 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Good filtration, regular water changes, and adequate oxygenation are important for maintaining healthy barbels, active behavior, and long-term condition.

Feeding Sodalis Corydoras is straightforward. In nature they search the substrate for insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and other edible organic material. In the aquarium they readily accept quality sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and other appropriately sized foods. They should be deliberately fed and should never be expected to survive solely on scraps left by other fish.

Temperament is peaceful, social, and community-friendly. Corydoras sodalis does well with tetras, pencilfish, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, peaceful gouramis, and other non-aggressive species. Aggressive fish and overly competitive bottom dwellers should be avoided, particularly if they prevent the Corydoras from reaching food.

Breeding is possible in captivity and follows the typical Corydoras pattern. Females hold fertilized eggs between their pelvic fins before attaching them individually to aquarium glass, plant leaves, or other smooth surfaces. Adults provide no parental care and may consume the eggs, so the eggs should be protected or transferred if fry are to be raised.

Corydoras sodalis is an attractive and somewhat uncommon Corydoras distinguished by its detailed network pattern, softly colored body, and banded tail. Its peaceful temperament, manageable size, and beautifully reticulated markings make the Sodalis Corydoras an excellent choice for planted aquariums and South American community setups.
