The Spotted Congo Puffer, scientifically known as Tetraodon schoutedeni, is a rare and highly sought-after freshwater pufferfish native to the slow-moving areas of the lower Congo River Basin in Central Africa. It is admired in the aquarium hobby for its attractive spotted pattern, expressive behavior, and comparatively peaceful temperament compared to many other puffers.

Adult Spotted Congo Puffers typically reach about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in length. They have a rounded, compact body with a beige to golden base color covered in bold dark brown or black spots. Their large, mobile eyes and animated movements give them a charismatic, curious personality that makes them a favorite among puffer keepers.

A tank of at least 40 gallons is recommended for a single specimen, with larger tanks required for groups. The aquarium should include soft sand substrate, driftwood, rocks, and plenty of plants or hiding places to explore. Moderate water flow and strong filtration help replicate their natural riverine environment and maintain water quality.

Water parameters should include a temperature of 75 to 79°F (24 to 26°C), a pH between 6.4 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Clean, well-oxygenated water with low nitrates is essential for their long-term health.

Feeding Tetraodon schoutedeni requires variety and foods that help naturally wear down their constantly growing teeth. Offer hard-shelled foods such as snails and small crustaceans, along with frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and earthworm-based preparations. They will also accept high-quality sinking carnivore pellets.

Spotted Congo Puffers are far more peaceful than many puffer species and can be kept either alone or in well-planned groups. If housing more than one, keep a group of six or more to diffuse aggression rather than attempting pairs or trios. Tankmates should be chosen carefully—small, fast, non-nippy fish in the mid- to upper-levels are generally acceptable, but avoid slow, long-finned, or bottom-dwelling species that may be harassed.

Breeding has occurred in captivity but remains uncommon. Courtship, spawning, and fry rearing require stable water conditions, hiding places, and careful feeding. This species lays eggs, and fry are small and delicate at first.

Tetraodon schoutedeni (Spotted Congo Puffer) is a captivating freshwater puffer with beautiful markings and engaging behavior. Its manageable size and relatively peaceful nature make it one of the most desirable puffers for experienced aquarists with an appropriately sized, well-maintained tank.
