Sumatran Red Neon Goby, Stiphodon cf. ornatus, is a small freshwater goby native to western Indonesia, particularly Sumatra. It inhabits clear, fast-flowing coastal streams and rivers that originate in upland areas and flow toward the sea. These habitats are characterized by rocky substrates, strong current, high oxygen levels, and clean, well-circulated water. Although adults live in freshwater, this species follows an amphidromous life cycle, meaning larvae drift to the sea before returning upstream to mature.

Adult Sumatran Red Neon Goby typically reaches about 1.5 to 2 inches in length. The body is slender and streamlined, with a flattened underside adapted for clinging to rocks in strong current. Males of this red form display vivid red to orange tones along the body with metallic blue or turquoise highlights, especially on the head and fins. Females are smaller and more subdued, usually gray to tan with faint patterning. The contrast between the glowing red body and shimmering blue accents gives mature males a striking appearance in well-lit river-style aquariums.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended, with larger tanks preferred for groups. This species thrives in aquariums designed to replicate fast-flowing streams, including smooth river stones, sand or fine gravel substrate, and strong directional flow. High oxygenation and consistent circulation are essential. The tank should provide ample grazing surfaces, as these gobies spend much of their time attached to rocks and glass.

Water conditions should be clean, stable, and well oxygenated. Temperatures between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.5 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Stability is critical, as Stiphodon species are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Frequent water changes and strong filtration help maintain long-term health.

Feeding Sumatran Red Neon Goby requires attention to their natural grazing habits. In the wild they feed on algae, biofilm, and microscopic organisms scraped from rocks. In the aquarium they should have access to natural biofilm growth and can be supplemented with algae-based foods, spirulina wafers, and finely powdered foods. Some individuals will accept frozen foods such as daphnia or baby brine shrimp, but vegetable matter and biofilm are essential components of their diet.

Temperament is peaceful and non-aggressive. Sumatran Red Neon Goby does well in community aquariums with other small, non-aggressive fish that tolerate strong flow. They should not be housed with aggressive or overly competitive species. Males may display toward one another, but serious aggression is uncommon when space and grazing surfaces are sufficient.

Breeding in captivity is extremely unlikely due to their amphidromous life cycle. While adults may spawn in freshwater, the larvae require brackish to marine conditions for development before returning to freshwater, making full life-cycle breeding impractical in typical home aquariums.

Stiphodon cf. ornatus is a brilliantly colored, high-flow specialist best suited for river-style aquariums with strong circulation and established biofilm. Its vivid red and blue coloration, constant grazing behavior, and peaceful nature make it a standout choice for aquarists seeking a dynamic and visually striking goby species.
