Super Orange Aequidens, Aequidens superomaculatum, is a South American cichlid native to the upper Orinoco and Río Negro systems of Venezuela, particularly within the Casiquiare Canal drainage that connects the Orinoco and Amazon basins. It inhabits slow-moving blackwater and clearwater shallows with sandy substrates, submerged wood, leaf litter, and moderate structure. These environments are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, with gentle flow and abundant cover.

Adult Aequidens superomaculatum typically reaches about 5 to 6 inches in length. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed with a smooth forehead profile and refined proportions compared to many larger cichlids. Base coloration ranges from bronze to olive with extensive iridescent blue-green spotting across the face, body, and fins. Mature specimens, especially dominant males, often develop strong orange to reddish coloration through the lower body and fins, which is why the species is commonly sold as the Super Orange Aequidens. A defining feature of the species is the elevated dark lateral blotch positioned high on the body beneath the dorsal region, combined with a continuous dark lateral stripe.

A tank of at least 55 to 75 gallons is recommended for a single adult or compatible pair. The aquarium should include driftwood, root structures, rockwork, and open substrate areas to allow natural territorial behavior while maintaining visual barriers. Sand or fine gravel substrate works well, and moderate water movement with strong filtration is ideal.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 5.5 to 7.0 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Like many Orinoco and Río Negro cichlids, this species responds best to stable conditions, good oxygenation, and regular water changes.

Feeding Aequidens superomaculatum is straightforward. In nature it feeds on insects, crustaceans, worms, and small aquatic animals. In the aquarium it readily accepts high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and chopped seafood. A varied diet helps maintain coloration and overall condition.

Temperament is moderate for a cichlid of its size. Aequidens superomaculatum is territorial but generally less aggressive than many similarly sized cichlids. It can be maintained with other medium-sized, non-hyperaggressive South American species in appropriately sized aquariums. Very small fish may still be viewed as prey.

Breeding is possible in captivity. Like other Aequidens-type cichlids, they are substrate spawners that lay eggs on flat surfaces such as stones or wood. Both parents participate in guarding eggs and fry, and territorial behavior increases during spawning.

Aequidens superomaculatum is an elegant and increasingly sought-after South American cichlid valued for its metallic spotting, orange coloration, and comparatively manageable temperament. With stable soft water and appropriate space, the Super Orange Aequidens becomes a colorful and engaging centerpiece for Amazonian and Orinoco-style aquariums.
