The Synodontis eupterus is a striking and popular species of upside-down catfish native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of West and Central Africa, particularly the White Nile and Chad Basin. Commonly called the Featherfin Synodontis or Featherfin Squeaker, it is prized for its dramatic, flowing dorsal fin and peaceful, community-friendly temperament.

Adult Featherfin Synodontis typically reach about 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) in length, though some individuals may grow slightly larger. Their body is silvery to grayish-brown with irregular dark spots and a network of marbling or reticulated patterns along the sides. The most distinctive feature is the large, sail-like dorsal fin with elongated rays, especially prominent in adults. The fins are often edged with white, and the pectoral and caudal fins may be mottled or banded.

A tank of at least 55 gallons is recommended for a single Featherfin Synodontis, with more space preferred for groups or mixed species setups. The aquarium should have a soft sand or smooth gravel substrate, plenty of hiding spots using driftwood, rocks, and caves, and moderate to subdued lighting. Featherfin Synodontis are mostly nocturnal and will appreciate shaded areas or dense planting.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 72 to 82°F (22 to 28°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and strong filtration are essential, as these catfish can be messy eaters and produce significant waste.

Feeding the Featherfin Synodontis is straightforward, as they are omnivorous and will accept a variety of sinking pellets, wafers, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and earthworms. They will also graze on leftover food and algae, but plant material and spirulina-based foods are beneficial for long-term health.

Featherfin Synodontis are peaceful and do well in community tanks with other medium to large, non-aggressive fish. Avoid housing them with very small tankmates that might be seen as food, or with highly territorial cichlids. They are social with their own kind but may establish a loose hierarchy, so provide multiple hiding places.

Breeding Synodontis eupterus in captivity is rare and not well documented, as most individuals in the trade are wild-caught. They are believed to be egg scatterers, spawning during the rainy season in the wild, with no parental care provided.

Synodontis eupterus (Featherfin Synodontis) is an impressive, hardy catfish that brings personality, motion, and unique beauty to large African or community aquariums.
