Texas Cichlid, Herichthys cyanoguttatus, is a large North American cichlid native to the Rio Grande drainage of Texas and northeastern Mexico, as well as nearby river systems along the Gulf slope. It inhabits rivers, reservoirs, and slow-moving waters with rocky or sandy substrates, submerged wood, and moderate to strong flow. These environments are typically warm, moderately hard to hard, and often slightly alkaline.

Adult Texas Cichlids commonly reach 10 to 12 inches in length, with some individuals growing larger in spacious aquariums. The body is thick and laterally compressed with a strong, muscular build. Coloration is highly distinctive, featuring a dark gray to greenish base covered in iridescent blue, turquoise, or pearly white spotting across the body and fins. Mature males may develop a pronounced nuchal hump and more intense coloration, while females are generally smaller but still vividly patterned.

A tank of at least 125 gallons is recommended for a single adult, with significantly larger aquariums required for pairs or community setups. The aquarium should include large rocks, driftwood, and sturdy structures to create territories and break lines of sight. Substrate can be sand or gravel, though digging behavior is common. Plants are often uprooted or damaged and are generally not suitable unless well protected.

Water conditions should reflect their native environment. Temperatures between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 7.0 to 8.5 and moderate to hard water. Texas Cichlids are very tolerant of varied conditions but require stable, clean water. Strong filtration and regular water changes are important due to their size and waste production.

Feeding Texas Cichlids is straightforward. In nature they are omnivorous, consuming insects, crustaceans, plant material, and small fish. In the aquarium they readily accept high-quality pellets, frozen foods such as shrimp and bloodworms, and occasional vegetable matter. A varied diet supports growth, coloration, and overall health.

Temperament is aggressive and territorial, especially as the fish matures. Texas Cichlids are not suitable for peaceful community aquariums and are best kept with other large, robust, and equally aggressive species in very large tanks. Smaller or timid fish will be harassed or killed.

Breeding Texas Cichlids is achievable in captivity. They are substrate spawners that lay eggs on flat surfaces such as rocks or tank glass. Both parents guard the eggs and fry aggressively. During breeding, aggression increases significantly, and tankmates may need to be removed.

Herichthys cyanoguttatus is a bold, hardy, and highly interactive cichlid that offers striking coloration and strong personality. With adequate space, durable tankmates, and proper filtration, the Texas Cichlid becomes a dominant centerpiece species in large aquariums designed for aggressive fish.
