The Threadfin Goby, scientifically known as Sicyopterus longifilis, is an energetic, river-dwelling species native to fast-flowing, clear mountain streams in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It is recognized in the aquarium hobby for its elongated, streamlined body, distinctive filamentous extensions on the dorsal and caudal fins, and fascinating natural behaviors. This goby is ideal for experienced aquarists looking to create a dynamic stream or river tank setup.

Adult Threadfin Gobies typically reach about 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm) in length. Males are especially striking, with long, thread-like filaments on their dorsal and caudal fins and enhanced iridescent coloration, which can include shades of blue, green, or silver. Females are generally plainer, with shorter fins and more subdued hues, but both sexes share the characteristic elongated shape built for clinging to rocks in fast currents.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a small group. The aquarium should have a sandy or fine gravel substrate and be furnished with smooth river stones, rounded pebbles, and driftwood to replicate their native habitat. Powerful water flow, high oxygenation, and pristine water quality are essential for this species—river tank manifolds, powerheads, or strong filters are ideal. A tight-fitting lid is necessary, as Threadfin Gobies are strong jumpers.

Water parameters for the Threadfin Goby should include a temperature range of 72 to 78°F (22 to 26°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and stable, clean conditions are crucial for long-term health.

Feeding the Threadfin Goby can be challenging, as they are specialized grazers and micro-predators. In the wild, they scrape algae, biofilm, and small invertebrates from rock surfaces. In captivity, offer a varied diet of live or frozen foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops, and bloodworms. Some individuals will accept high-quality sinking micro pellets, gel foods, or algae wafers, but natural algae growth in the tank will be appreciated.

Threadfin Gobies are generally peaceful and can be kept with other small, fast-moving riverine fish, such as hillstream loaches, danios, or small rasboras. Avoid aggressive or slow-moving tankmates, as well as large predators. They do best either in species groups or with compatible bottom-dwellers that share their love of strong current.

Breeding the Threadfin Goby in captivity is extremely rare and challenging, as they are believed to have an amphidromous life cycle—larvae drift downstream to brackish or marine environments before returning to freshwater as juveniles. Spawning behavior may be observed, but successful rearing of fry is not documented in the home aquarium.

Sicyopterus longifilis (Threadfin Goby) is a captivating and energetic species, perfect for aquarists looking to create a dynamic, high-flow stream tank with clean water and unique behavior.
