The Tiger Face Whiptail, scientifically referred to as Pseudohemiodon sp. “Tigre,” is an undescribed whiptail loricariid (armored catfish) from Peru, likely in middle-Amazon and tributary systems near Iquitos. It is valued for its distinctive facial patterning, slender build, and sand-dwelling habits.

Adult individuals can reach 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm) or more in length. They have a very flat, elongated body adapted for life over sandy substrates. Their color pattern consists of tan to light brown base tones with darker brown or black striping or reticulation, particularly dramatic on the head region (hence “Tiger Face”). The lower body is pale, blending into the sand when they bury themselves partially.

A tank of at least 40 gallons or more is recommended for a single specimen. They require a fine, clean sand substrate, broad flat stones, driftwood, and gentle water flow. The tank should allow them to bury themselves partially in the substrate, leaving eyes and dorsal fin visible. High oxygenation and clean water are essential given their delicate skin and habitat preferences.

Water parameters should include temperature of 76 to 82°F (24 to 28°C), pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Stable water chemistry and very low nitrate levels help prevent stress and skin problems.

Feeding Pseudohemiodon sp. “Tigre” is best done at dusk or night. They are bottom feeders that accept fine frozen or live foods—worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans—and should also take high-quality sinking pellets or gel foods formulated for bottom dwellers. Occasional vegetable matter is tolerated but not preferred.

They are generally peaceful toward other species, but may be territorial with conspecifics over sand territories and burrows. Suitable tankmates include other peaceful, midwater or topwater fish; avoid large, aggressive, or bottom-dwelling competitors.

Breeding in captivity for Pseudohemiodon sp. “Tigre” is undocumented and may be very difficult. Their specialized behaviors and environmental needs remain largely unknown.

Pseudohemiodon sp. “Tigre” (Tiger Face Whiptail) is a striking, behaviorally interesting sand-dwelling loricariid that rewards patient aquarists with its subtle beauty and fascinating substrate behavior.
