The Tropical Gudgeon, scientifically known as Hypseleotris cyprinoides, is a small, peaceful species of eleotrid goby native to coastal rivers, streams, and estuaries across northern Australia, New Guinea, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. It is valued in the aquarium hobby for its adaptability, schooling nature, and ease of care.

Adult Tropical Gudgeons typically reach about 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) in length. They have an elongated, laterally compressed body with a silvery or pale olive color, sometimes showing faint vertical bars or a golden sheen along the flanks. Males may exhibit more intense coloration and subtle orange or red highlights in the fins during breeding, while females are more subdued.

A tank of at least 15 to 20 gallons is recommended for a small group. Tropical Gudgeons are generally peaceful and do best in groups of five or more. The aquarium should have a sandy or fine gravel substrate, scattered rocks, driftwood, and live or artificial plants for cover. Moderate water flow and hiding places help replicate their natural environment.

Water parameters for the Tropical Gudgeon should include a temperature range of 68 to 79°F (20 to 26°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. This species tolerates a range of water conditions and can even adapt to slightly brackish environments, but thrives in clean, well-oxygenated freshwater with regular partial water changes.

Feeding Hypseleotris cyprinoides is straightforward, as they are omnivorous and accept most foods. Offer high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and supplement with live or frozen foods like daphnia, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. They may also graze on algae and detritus.

Tropical Gudgeons are peaceful and make good tankmates for other small, non-aggressive fish such as rainbows, small tetras, danios, and Corydoras. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or much larger species.

Breeding the Tropical Gudgeon in captivity is possible but rare. In the wild, they are believed to spawn in both fresh and brackish water. Males may become territorial and guard small patches of substrate or plants where eggs are laid. The fry are tiny and should be fed infusoria or other micro foods once hatched.

Hypseleotris cyprinoides (Tropical Gudgeon) is a hardy, adaptable species that brings activity and peaceful schooling behavior to community aquariums.
