The True Freshwater Bumblebee Goby, scientifically known as Brachygobius xanthomelas, is a small, boldly patterned goby native to freshwater streams, rivers, and flooded forests of Borneo and Sumatra. Unlike many other bumblebee gobies that require brackish conditions, this species thrives in pure freshwater environments, making it a desirable and sought-after option for specialized nano tanks.

Adult True Freshwater Bumblebee Gobies typically reach about 1 to 1.3 inches (2.5 to 3.3 cm) in length. They have a compact, rounded body marked by alternating black and yellow bands, which serve as a warning pattern in their natural habitat. Males are often more vividly colored, particularly during breeding, while females are slightly plumper and less intensely pigmented.

A tank of at least 10 gallons is suitable for a small group. These gobies are social and display best in groups of six or more, which helps reduce aggression and encourages natural interactions. The aquarium should feature a sandy substrate, scattered smooth rocks, small caves, and dense aquatic plants or moss to provide cover and territorial boundaries. Floating plants or subdued lighting will also help replicate their natural habitat.

Water parameters should include a temperature of 75 to 82°F (24 to 28°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Pristine water quality is essential, as bumblebee gobies are sensitive to pollution and sudden changes in water chemistry.

Feeding Brachygobius xanthomelas can be challenging, as they prefer live foods. Offer small live fare such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, and micro worms. Some individuals will accept frozen foods, but most will ignore dry or prepared foods.

True Freshwater Bumblebee Gobies are peaceful but territorial with their own kind, especially males. They do well with other small, non-aggressive fish such as micro rasboras or small peaceful catfish. Avoid housing them with large or fast-moving tankmates that may outcompete them for food.

Breeding Brachygobius xanthomelas in captivity is possible. Males guard the eggs, which are typically laid in small caves or crevices. After hatching, the fry should be fed infusoria or freshly hatched baby brine shrimp.

Brachygobius xanthomelas (True Freshwater Bumblebee Goby) is a striking and intriguing nano species, perfect for dedicated aquarists seeking unique behavior and vibrant coloration in a small aquarium.
