Turquoise Severum, Heros efasciatus, is a South American cichlid native to the Amazon Basin, with a distribution that includes Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, floodplain lakes, and forested backwaters with submerged wood, leaf litter, and soft substrates. These environments are typically warm, slightly acidic to neutral, and moderately soft, with gentle flow and abundant structure.

Adult Turquoise Severums commonly reach 8 to 10 inches in length, with some individuals growing slightly larger in spacious aquariums. The body is tall and laterally compressed, giving it a disc-like profile similar to a smaller Oscar. The turquoise variety displays a green to teal base coloration overlaid with shimmering blue-green speckling across the body and fins. Faint vertical barring may be visible, especially in juveniles or during stress. Mature specimens develop rich metallic coloration that intensifies under good lighting and diet.

A tank of at least 75 gallons is recommended for a single individual, with 100 gallons or more preferred for pairs or community setups. The aquarium should include driftwood, rockwork, and open swimming space. While Severums are generally less destructive than many other large cichlids, they may uproot delicate plants, so hardy species or well-anchored plants are recommended. Moderate water movement and strong filtration are important due to their size and waste production.

Water conditions should reflect warm Amazonian habitats. Temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water. Turquoise Severums are adaptable but thrive best in stable, clean conditions. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential for maintaining health and coloration.

Feeding Turquoise Severums is straightforward. In nature they are omnivorous, feeding on plant matter, insects, crustaceans, and small aquatic organisms. In the aquarium they accept high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen foods such as bloodworms and shrimp, and vegetable-based foods including spirulina and blanched greens. A varied diet supports strong growth and vibrant coloration.

Temperament is generally peaceful for a large cichlid, though they can become territorial, especially during breeding. They are suitable for community setups with other medium to large, non-aggressive fish. Very small fish may be eaten, and highly aggressive tankmates should be avoided.

Breeding Turquoise Severums is achievable in captivity. They are substrate spawners, laying eggs on flat rocks, wood, or tank surfaces. Both parents guard the eggs and fry, displaying typical cichlid parental behavior. Stable water conditions and appropriate space are important for successful breeding.

Heros efasciatus in its turquoise form is a striking, intelligent cichlid that combines manageable temperament with bold coloration. With adequate space, clean water, and compatible tankmates, the Turquoise Severum becomes a colorful and interactive centerpiece in large freshwater aquariums.
