Nothobranchius rubripinnis is a small African annual killifish native to coastal southeastern Tanzania, where it inhabits shallow, temporary freshwater pools formed during the rainy season. These pools occur in lowland savanna and coastal plain environments and are highly seasonal, filling with warm rainwater for only part of the year before drying completely. As a result, the species has evolved a rapid life cycle adapted to extreme environmental change, with adults living only a few months while their eggs survive the dry season buried in the substrate.

Adult Nothobranchius rubripinnis typically reaches around 1.75 to 2 inches in length. Males are intensely colored and visually striking, displaying a bright turquoise to steel-blue body with vivid red finnage, particularly in the caudal, dorsal, and anal fins. The contrast between the blue body and red fins is sharp and eye-catching, especially under good lighting. Females are smaller and more subdued, usually tan to brown with transparent fins, allowing the males’ coloration to stand out even more dramatically. Despite their small size, males have a bold presence and actively display to rivals and females.

A tank of 10 to 15 gallons is sufficient for a trio or small group, with a layout designed around their natural seasonal habitat. Fine sand or peat-based substrate is recommended, both to support natural behavior and to allow for egg collection if breeding is desired. The aquarium should include minimal hardscape, subdued lighting, and gentle filtration, as these fish come from still or very slow-moving water. Floating plants are helpful for cover and for diffusing light, while open bottom areas allow males to display.

Water conditions should reflect warm, soft seasonal pools. Temperatures between 72 and 80°F are appropriate, with a pH generally between 6.0 and 7.5. Stability is important during their short lifespan, and water should be kept clean with regular small water changes. Strong current should be avoided, as it causes stress and interferes with natural behavior.

Feeding Nothobranchius rubripinnis is straightforward but should be protein-focused. In nature they feed heavily on insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other tiny aquatic animals that bloom rapidly in temporary pools. In the aquarium they thrive on frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and blackworms. Many individuals will accept high-quality small pellets, but frozen and live foods bring out the best coloration and condition.

Temperament is typical of Nothobranchius species. Males are territorial toward one another and should not be housed together unless the tank is large and heavily structured. A common setup is one male with two or more females, which reduces stress and spreads breeding attention. They are not suitable for community aquariums and are best kept in species-focused setups due to their specialized needs and short lifespan.

Breeding Nothobranchius rubripinnis is well documented and follows the classic annual killifish pattern. Eggs are deposited into soft substrate such as peat, where they enter a period of diapause and can be dried and stored for several months. After the appropriate incubation period, the eggs are rewetted to trigger hatching, closely mimicking the natural rainy season cycle. This reproductive strategy is a major part of the appeal of annual killifish for experienced hobbyists.

Nothobranchius rubripinnis is a vivid, short-lived species that offers intense color and fascinating life history in a compact package. Its brilliant red fins, rapid maturation, and unique breeding cycle make it an exceptional choice for aquarists interested in seasonal species and natural reproductive strategies, provided its specialized care requirements are understood and respected.
