The White Spotted Towuti Rabbit Snail, scientifically known as Tylomelania towutensis, comes from the Malili Lake system in Sulawesi, Indonesia—primarily Lake Towuti and connected tributaries.

Adults of this species can grow up to about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in length. They have tall, spiral shells often dark brown or black, decorated with bright white or yellow-white spots, and tapered to a tapered point. Their body is elongated, and they move in a characteristic “rabbit-like” hop, thanks to their strong muscular foot and long antennae.

A tank of at least 20 gallons (and larger if housing multiple snails) is recommended. Provide a fine sand or very smooth gravel substrate, plenty of driftwood, stones, and leaf-litter for grazing surfaces and shelter. These snails can bury partially and climb décor, so avoid sharp decorations.

Water parameters should include a temperature of 76 to 84°F (24 to 29°C), a pH between 7.5 and 9.0 (alkaline), and hard, mineral-rich water to support shell growth. These snails originate from high-mineral lake systems, so stable, clean water and alkalinity are important.

Feeding Tylomelania towutensis is straightforward. They are omnivores and scavengers: in addition to algae and biofilm, give them sinking wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber. Because of their size and slow movements, ensure food remains available on the substrate.

White Spotted Towuti Rabbit Snails are peaceful and compatible with calm community setups—but note their large size compared to typical nanoinvertebrates. Avoid housing them with fish or inverts that may harass or prey on them. They reproduce slowly: livebearing, releasing fully formed baby snails in small numbers, so they will not overrun a tank.

Tylomelania towutensis (White Spotted Towuti Rabbit Snail) is a striking, unique invertebrate that adds dramatic shell patterning, interesting substrate activity, and long-term interest to appropriately sized aquariums.
