The Yellow Acara, scientifically known as Aequidens metae, is a robust yet generally peaceful cichlid native to slow-moving rivers, lagoons, and floodplain habitats of the Orinoco drainage. It is popular in the aquarium hobby for its attractive golden body coloration and suitability for community setups with other South American fish.

Adult Yellow Acaras typically reach about 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) in length. They have a deep, oval-shaped body with a golden to yellow sheen, accented by subtle blue and green iridescence on the face and flanks. A dark lateral spot is usually visible on the mid-body, and the fins often show red, orange, or turquoise highlights, particularly in well-conditioned males.

A tank of at least 55 gallons is recommended for a pair. Yellow Acaras appreciate a sandy substrate with driftwood, smooth stones, and live or hardy artificial plants for cover. They dig during spawning, so plan the aquascape accordingly. Open swimming areas are also important.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 74 to 82°F (23 to 28°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. They thrive in clean, well-filtered tanks with stable water conditions.

Feeding Aequidens metae is easy, as they are omnivores. They accept high-quality cichlid pellets and flakes, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. Occasional vegetable matter (spirulina-based foods or blanched greens) helps balance their diet.

Yellow Acaras are peaceful compared to many larger cichlids, making them good companions for tetras, Corydoras, peaceful catfish, and even angelfish. However, they may become territorial during spawning, so tankmates should be chosen with that in mind.

Breeding Aequidens metae in captivity is possible. They are substrate spawners that lay eggs on flat rocks or cleared surfaces. Both parents guard the eggs and fry, with fry being large enough to take baby brine shrimp once free-swimming.

Aequidens metae (Yellow Acara) is a hardy, colorful South American cichlid that makes a striking yet manageable addition to medium and large community aquariums.
