Yellow Labidochromis, Labidochromis caeruleus, is a Lake Malawi cichlid native to the rocky shorelines of the lake in East Africa. Its natural distribution is centered around rocky habitats along the northwestern regions of Lake Malawi, where it inhabits crevices, rock piles, and transitional zones between rock and sand. These environments are warm, highly oxygenated, alkaline, and extremely stable year-round.

Adult Yellow Labidochromis typically reaches about 4 to 5 inches in length. The body is elongated and streamlined compared to many mbuna cichlids, with a bright solid yellow base coloration that can range from pale lemon to intense electric yellow depending on lineage and condition. Most specimens display contrasting black edging along the dorsal fin, and some also show black markings on the pelvic and anal fins. Their clean, vibrant coloration makes them one of the most recognizable and popular African cichlids in the hobby.

A tank of at least 55 gallons is recommended for a proper group, with larger aquariums preferred for mixed African cichlid communities. The aquarium should include extensive rockwork with caves, crevices, and broken lines of sight to establish territories and reduce aggression. Open swimming areas should remain between rock structures, and sand or fine gravel works well as substrate.

Water conditions should closely reflect Lake Malawi. Temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 7.8 to 8.6 and moderate to high hardness. Stability and strong filtration are extremely important, as mbuna cichlids produce a significant bioload and require highly oxygenated water.

Feeding Yellow Labidochromis should include a balanced omnivorous diet. In nature they feed on small invertebrates picked from rock surfaces along with algae and biofilm. In the aquarium they readily accept high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based foods, frozen brine shrimp, and other prepared foods. Excessive high-protein feeding should be avoided to reduce the risk of digestive issues common in African cichlids.

Temperament is moderate for an mbuna species. Yellow Labidochromis is generally less aggressive than many other Lake Malawi rock-dwelling cichlids, making it a good introduction to African cichlid setups. It can be maintained with other similarly sized mbuna in appropriately structured aquariums, though territorial disputes and chasing are still normal behavior.

Breeding is readily achieved in captivity. Like many Lake Malawi cichlids, Yellow Labidochromis is a maternal mouthbrooder. Females carry eggs and fry in the mouth for several weeks before releasing fully formed juveniles. Breeding behavior is frequent in stable groups with proper conditions.

Labidochromis caeruleus is a hardy, active, and brilliantly colored African cichlid that combines manageable aggression with striking appearance. Its vivid yellow coloration and adaptability make it one of the most popular and reliable species for Lake Malawi aquariums.
