Yellowfin Shiner, Notropis lutipinnis, is a small North American minnow native to the southeastern United States. Its range includes river systems in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and the Carolinas, particularly within the Coosa, Tennessee, and Savannah River drainages. It inhabits clear, moderately flowing streams and small rivers with gravel or rocky substrates, where water is well oxygenated and typically cooler than tropical aquarium conditions.

Adult Yellowfin Shiners usually reach about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. The body is slender and streamlined with a reflective silver base coloration. A faint to moderate lateral stripe may be present depending on lighting and condition. The fins, especially the dorsal and caudal fins, often show a distinct yellow tint, which gives rise to the common name. During breeding condition, males may develop more intense coloration and subtle iridescence.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a proper group, though larger tanks are preferred. Yellowfin Shiners are active schooling fish and should be kept in groups of eight or more to reduce stress and display natural behavior. The aquarium should provide open swimming space with rocks, driftwood, and plants along the edges. Moderate to strong water movement is recommended to replicate their natural habitat.

Water conditions should reflect their native temperate streams. Temperatures between 64 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with a pH range of roughly 6.5 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. They require clean, well-oxygenated water and benefit from strong filtration and regular water changes. Warmer tropical conditions are generally not suitable long term.

Feeding Yellowfin Shiners is straightforward. In nature they feed on small insects, larvae, algae, and organic material. In the aquarium they accept flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. A varied diet supports health and natural coloration.

Temperament is peaceful and highly active. Yellowfin Shiners do well with other temperate species that tolerate similar flow and cooler water conditions. Suitable tankmates include other minnows, darters, and peaceful bottom dwellers adapted to similar environments. They are not appropriate for typical tropical community tanks.

Breeding is possible in captivity but not commonly pursued. They are egg scatterers that release eggs over gravel or substrate. Adults do not provide parental care, and eggs may be consumed if not separated.

Notropis lutipinnis is a lively, reflective schooling fish that brings constant motion and subtle color to temperate aquariums. Its preference for cooler, high-oxygen water makes it best suited for stream-style setups rather than standard tropical tanks.
