The Zebra Otocinclus, scientifically known as Otocinclus cocama, is a strikingly patterned freshwater fish native to the slow-moving, vegetation-rich rivers and streams of Peru. This species is part of the Otocinclus genus, well known for their algae-eating abilities and peaceful nature, making them a favorite choice for aquarists with planted tanks. The Zebra Otocinclus is particularly sought after for its unique black-and-white striped pattern, which sets it apart from other Otocinclus species.

Physically, the Zebra Otocinclus is distinguished by its bold black stripes running horizontally along its body, alternating with white or light-colored bands, giving it a “zebra-like” appearance. This striking pattern extends to its tail and pectoral fins. Like other Otocinclus species, it has a small, streamlined body and a sucker mouth designed for clinging to surfaces and grazing on algae. Adult Zebra Otocinclus typically reach a size of 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 centimeters), making them ideal for smaller tanks and nano setups.

In the aquarium, Zebra Otocinclus thrive in a well-planted environment with plenty of surfaces to graze on, such as rocks, driftwood, and plant leaves. They prefer subdued lighting and appreciate shaded areas created by dense vegetation or floating plants. A tank size of at least 10 gallons is recommended, though larger tanks are better for maintaining stable water parameters. Because they are social fish, they should be kept in groups of at least six to mimic their natural schooling behavior and reduce stress.

Water parameters for Zebra Otocinclus should mimic their natural habitat. They prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 and temperatures between 72 to 79°F (22 to 26°C). Clean water is crucial for their health, as they are sensitive to poor water quality. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential to maintain optimal conditions.

Feeding Zebra Otocinclus is relatively easy, as they are algae grazers and will naturally feed on biofilm and soft algae in the tank. However, in aquariums with insufficient algae growth, their diet should be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach, and spirulina-based foods. They may also benefit from occasional treats of biofilm-rich surfaces, such as leaves or stones from established aquariums.

Breeding Zebra Otocinclus in captivity is rare but possible with the right conditions. They are egg scatterers and require a clean, well-oxygenated tank with plenty of surfaces for egg deposition, such as plant leaves or smooth stones. Spawning can be triggered by mimicking seasonal changes, such as slightly cooler water changes and increased food availability. The eggs hatch in 2 to 4 days, and the fry can be fed on infusoria or powdered algae food until they are large enough to graze on biofilm.

Overall, the Zebra Otocinclus (Otocinclus cocama) is a beautiful and peaceful species that adds both visual appeal and functionality to freshwater aquariums. Their striking pattern, small size, and algae-eating abilities make them a perfect addition to planted tanks and community setups. With proper care, attention to water quality, and a suitable environment, Zebra Otocinclus can thrive and bring a unique charm to any aquarium.
